What is Space Optimized?
When talking about optimizing, people often assume that the key component is having less. Less space, less possessions, and less of the things they love. Nothing could be further from the truth. At Space Optimized, we focus on giving you more. More time, more money, more of the things in your life that truly make you happy. We focus on clearing away the clutter and honing in on the things that matter most.
The key concepts behind Space Optimized began in 2015 when Michael Tanzillo decided he wanted to have a dinner party for 6 guests. The problem was, Michael lived in a tiny 275-square-foot apartment on New York’s Upper West Side. Most of his floor space was occupied by his bed and a small couch. There was little room for a table, chairs… or people, for that matter. It was at this point that Michael decided to take a step back, declutter his home, and optimize his space.
To optimize his space, Michael learned he had to be brutally honest with himself. Will he ever find a good use for the ice cream maker that’s collecting dust in the back of the closet? How about that camping tent that he used once 7 years ago? Was he able to maximize these objects or were they just there to take up space so Michael could think of himself as an outdoorsy dude who can also make delicious desserts?
Michael came to the harsh reality that he’s been keeping these objects because of what they represented, not because of what they did. The process of organizing his home helped Michael gain a better understanding of himself and what his life was all about.
For a year he researched, experimented, and finally transformed his space. He found budget-friendly, space-saving solutions that turned his once-cramped apartment into a functional, well-designed space. Michael knew that scaling back the size of a space didn’t mean he had to skimp on style. So he developed stylish solutions that were not only functional but aesthetically pleasing as well.
Through this experience, Michael learned the overall benefits that come from optimizing a space that suits a specific lifestyle. He applied organizational techniques he learned from books, such as The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and The More of Less, to eliminate needless possessions and focus on what mattered most to him. This left him surrounded by all the things that he loved and nothing else. No more cluttered drawers or overstuffed closets filled with junk he never used. He even discovered that de-cluttering his home led to happiness in every other aspect of his life.
In 2016, Michael launched Space Optimized to help others transform their space and their lives the same way he had. The content is based on Michael’s belief that any space can be simple, functional, and beautiful no matter the size. Downsizing is an incredibly difficult concept for most of us because the natural progression of life is about growth and gaining more. Bigger houses, bigger paychecks, and more stuff are the norm and the thought of reversing that pattern can be unsettling. But downsizing has wonderful benefits too:
- Smaller spaces cost less and you will have more money for vacations, education, and activities that you enjoy
- Ever felt like you couldn’t live in your ideal part of town because it was too expensive? Downsizing means you can now afford to live exactly where you want – perhaps in your neighborhood with all your favorite restaurants or right on the ocean.
- Love spending your entire Sundays on cleaning and yard work? Of course not. A smaller home means less time spent on cleaning, maintenance, and more time doing the things you love.
- An oversized home means lots of furniture and higher costs when remodeling. A smaller space means you can finally splurge on the nicer sofa, a fancy sink, or customized cabinets.
- If you are environmentally-conscious, smaller spaces mean a smaller carbon footprint. Less energy is spent on heating and cooling and less is required to maintain the space.
There’s no need for drastic changes in order to achieve the benefits of downsizing. Maybe a transition from a 4-bedroom home to a 3-bedroom home is all you need to see some major cost savings. Instead of living in a 3000 sq. ft. house, reduce that number to 2000 and watch your energy bills get drastically reduced.
Because whether you live in a mansion or a studio apartment, the concepts and practices of Space Optimized can help you in your ultimate pursuit of more time, more savings, more freedom, and more happiness.
