Looking for home cleaning tips to prep your small apartment for the holidays?
The holidays are upon us, is your home ready to receive holiday guests? Think a small apartment is much easier to organize and maintain? Think again! Small spaces tend to attract clutter much faster due to the limited floor space! When stored in a small space, all your belongings could quickly overflow everywhere, making your living space look messier, more disorganized!
Entertaining holiday guests is stressful enough, don’t let a messy home dampen your Christmas spirit! Here are easy home cleaning tips that’ll help you achieve and maintain a clean and tidy home, just in time for the holidays:
Get Off the Couch
Well, the house won’t clean itself, that’s for sure. Most people hate the idea of deep cleaning their homes but if you are expecting a lot of holiday guests, stop procrastinating and start planning your housecleaning tasks. Anytime is the best time to clean the house, don’t wait until the guests start pouring in before you tidy up.
You will do a lot of vacuuming, sweeping, dusting, and organizing so walk around the house and check areas/items that require more effort to clean. The kitchen, bathroom, and living room should take more effort to clean because these are high-traffic areas. Rugs, curtains, or carpets, decors that attract dust, dirt, or grime like nobody’s business should be professionally cleaned. Add these to your list of home cleaning tasks and prioritize them.
To make cleaning less daunting, do it in steps. Break down your home cleaning tasks into small jobs and work through them consistently. You can either go through each room, start with the hardest cleaning jobs first, or start with the easiest cleaning jobs, the plan is up to you.
Ask for Help
Cleaning can be therapeutic for some, a chore for most people. If say, you hate cleaning or the job is simply too big for one person, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Turn home cleaning into a family affair so you’ll get all your cleaning tasks done in half the time.
Gather your family members, go over the housecleaning tasks you just outlined and start designating chores. Housecleaning makes a terrific family activity especially if you have kids. You gotta start ‘em young! And while they’re at it, get them to put out the holiday decorations to prep your small apartment for the festivities ahead.
Junk tends to accumulate faster in a small apartment. Clearing your home of clutter is easy especially when done in steps. Decluttering may sound daunting for most people because of how fast things could pile up but believe me, as long as you have a system in place, this chore is much easier to do.
Start by identifying which items to throw away. I highly suggest starting with old magazines or newspaper, expired bottles/cans of food or old meds, crumpled receipts, etc. With a large garbage bag in hand, go through each room and look for items to throw away or surface areas that need to be cleared/organized.
To save time, organize the little items that are set on top of any surface space while looking for stuff to throw away. Put your DVD or book collection in order, stack your coffee table books neatly, put all the dirty clothes into the hamper, return all items to their rightful places!
Roll Up Your Sleeves, Start Cleaning
After de-cluttering, your living space is now ready for a deep clean. So roll up your sleeves and get to work! Start by wiping all dusty surface areas/decors clean with a slightly damp cloth and then following up by wiping the same areas with a dry cloth. Wipe the windows, mirrors, and other glass surfaces with the right cleaner to avoid streaks. Give all knobs a good wipe using a cloth dampened with a little antibacterial cleanser.
Dust hard to reach places, including ceiling corners, molding, etc., using an extendable duster. Give the whole house a good sweep or use the vacuum cleaner to remove all the dirt and dust that have accumulated everywhere, unseen or neglected spots including the bookshelves, photo frames, artworks, etc.. You want to be as thorough as possible so you don’t have to go over the same spot twice and waste precious time.
The kitchen is one of the dirtiest rooms in the home so you want to spend more time cleaning all the forgotten or hard to reach places like the spot behind the fridge, the grimy countertop, dusty shelves, inside the toaster, fridge, and garbage cans. Finish up the deep cleaning by spritzing a little Febreeze in every room to eliminate bad odors. By the time you finish up with the cleaning, your small apartment will look and feel new again!
Put Out the Decorations!
Now that the house is fresh and clean, you are ready to decorate your home! You can either decorate every spot in your small apartment or limit the decors around major focal points, it’s your call. You can use large decors, small accent pieces, as well as holiday-themed pillows, blankets, table runners, centerpieces, and wall decors to add a touch of festive cheer to the home.
To make the decorating easier and faster, get the whole family into it. The holiday season is all about celebrating with the whole family anyway so put out the decors and turn this activity into a family affair.
