When we think of saving space, our mind probably wanders off to different storage solutions. But, did you know that doors can make a massive difference to the space you have to play with (especially if you weren’t blessed with much in the first place)?

One of the biggest mistakes people make with their doors is misinterpreting the opening arc. Which often means it’s difficult to keep the space clear when you need to fit objects like a bed or couch inside the room. To combat this, savvy homeowners are increasingly turning to pocket doors to create a more open space. These internal door alternatives are also perfect for cupboard, wardrobe and ensuite doors too.

What Are Pocket Doors and How Do They Work?

When the doors are opened, they are pushed into a cavity within the wall. This minimizes the need to open the door out into the room as a traditional door would do. Pocket doors are most commonly fitted as a single door. But for a larger opening between rooms, two doors could be installed in tandem.

The trend of pocket doors isn’t new. It’s thought that they were widely installed in homes as early as the mid-1800s, using a V-roller system along the bottom of the door. But, in those days it was more common for wooden floors to sag. This made the doors hard use and noisy to open. A new system was developed to combat this wherein the track was moved to the top of the door – a system we still use today.

Pocket doors were first seen in Victorian homes. They were used to seal off sitting rooms and parlors and even though they’ve been around for nearly 200 years, there’s nothing old-fashioned about their functionality and benefits. The days of noisy V-rollers and jittery operation are well and truly over.

These days, you’ll notice hundreds of designs, colors, and styles that are perfect for an interior design that strives to create the illusion of space or even those that look to enhance the cozy and snug charm, which comes with a smaller place.

They are practical…

Pocket doors are incredibly practical. They have a unique ability to create individual space or open out a more expansive area; traditional internal doors aren’t able to do this.

Living in a smaller place means you’re always battling with space optimization. Pocket doors close off larger areas when they’re not being used – which helps to retain heat – and opens out space when you have company for example. While it is correct to say that pocket doors don’t offer the same acoustic advantages as regular doors, you won’t be able to slam them, which is great for the structure of the home and will prevent cracking up and along the walls.

Installation is not as hard as it may seem; many reputable companies now sell kits, that come with step-by-step instructions that can be followed with ease by any good contractor.

…And they are fun!

Doors are usually the last thing on your mind when you’re moving into a home and looking to stamp your mark on the property. Other than slapping some paint or oils onto traditional doors, there’s not really much else you can do. Pocket doors are more than just a charming old-fashioned relic. Replacing standard doors with them creates another dimension, you never thought possible. Pocket doors give you the opportunity to experiment with textures and colors that traditional doors don’t afford.

Just because a home is small, there’s no need for it to adhere to the pokey and dingy stereotypes that people think of when you tell them your place is small.

Pocket doors can give you the chance to make the most of your space and showcase your unique style, whether you like a more open and expansive look or an enchanting space that beckons your visitors ever inward.
