When you live in a small apartment, any functional décor that stretches the storage space while tidying things up is always welcome. That’s why we’re always searching for affordable and space-efficient small apartment DIY projects that’ll fit the tiniest of spaces!
Today’s small apartment DIY is courtesy of TheMerryThought! It’s a compact basket tower that you can make using basic tools. It’s a great piece to have in the entryway because it offers lots of room for your essentials. You can also use the basket tower in the living room or bedroom to organize your things and keep the space tidy and organized!
Are you ready to craft your own basket tower? Let’s get started!
You will need:
1″x2″x6′ furring strip
18-inch wood round for base
Two 1/4″x4″ lag bolts
Six white cup hooks
3 wire baskets
Step 1: Assembling the Base
Using your miter saw, cut the furring strip in half. Whip out your measuring tape then measure, mark, and cut three 15 inches pieces of dowel. Set aside. With your measuring tape, mark the center of each furring strip at 4 inches, 14 inches and 24 inches starting from the top.
Use your electric drill to drill out a hole at each of the furring strips’ marks. The hole should be big enough to fit the dowel perfectly. The tutorial says to try out a piece of scrap wood first when making the holes for practice.
Step 2: Attaching the Dowels
To assemble the dowel, position the furring strips 13 inches apart on the bottom of the wood round. With your measuring tape and pencil, measure and mark the center of the furring strip then drill a ¼ inch-deep hole on the marks using a large forester bit. Then, drill through the hole using a smaller drill bit.
Step 3: Assembling the Tower
Pre-drill the center of the furring strips’ base then secure the strips onto the round wood base using lag bolts. Once the furring strips are assembled, slide the dowels in place.
The dowels do all the heavy lifting so it should be attached firmly in between the furring strips, they should not move. If the hole is too big, you may have to use a little wood glue to create a tight fit.
When the dowels are set in place, you can hang the wire baskets. You can use plain wire baskets or painted ones, whichever you like. You can also give the entire thing a fresh coat of paint if you are that committed to the #DIYlife. And there you have it, your awesome new basket tower is complete! Pop this piece in the entryway and store all the items you often grab before heading out.
