A baby gym provides hours of entertainment for your little one. Buying a baby gym is nice but you cannot find one with a design that suits your minimalist sensibilities, why not make one on your own? Today’s small apartment DIY is from dasmundwerk.at and it’ll have you crafting a stylish, gender-neutral baby gym that will look good in any nursery.
Nothing is better than gifting your child something that you made yourself. And the baby gym you’ll be making is quite sturdy so this can be passed on to other kids once your baby outgrows it. To make this small apartment DIY much easier, I highly suggest having the wooden pieces cut to the right dimensions at your local hardware store. Are you ready to make a fabulous wooden baby gym for your little one? Let’s get started:
You will need:
4 pcs. 60 cm x 4.5 cm x 2 cm wood slats
1 pc. 55 cm long x 2 cm diameter rounded wood slat
4 pcs. 1.5 m leather strap
Wooden balls, wooden rings, and bells (your choice of colors)
20 mm wood drill
6 mm wood drill for leather strap
Step 1: Cut and Prep the Wood Slats
Using the miter saw, cut the wood slats to the above-mentioned dimensions. To get rid of the sharp ends, cut the corners and then sand the ends down until the entire top ends are rounded. Using a tape measure and a pencil, measure, and mark about 2 inches from the upper edge of each wood slat. You will drill a hole big enough to insert the rounded wood slat later on these marked points. About 15 cm from the bottom edge of the wooden slats, mark these points with a pencil. You will also drill smaller holes in these points for the leather bands.
Step 2: Crafting the Baby Gym Frame
Get your drill and start drilling holes in the mark points. The hole should be big enough to insert the rounded wooden slat. About 15 cm along the length of the wooden slats, drill smaller holes. Sand the edges of the holes, making sure there are no sharp points. Using the saw, cut the rounded wooden slat to a length of 55 cm. Then, drill a 6 mm hole about 1.5 mm from the ends so you can tie the leather bands later. Set aside.
Step 3: Assembling the Baby Gym Frame
At this point, you can start assembling the hanging toys. Just drill tiny holes into each wooden toy or figure then string them into a leather strip. Secure the strung toys by tying a knot then attach the wood ring. After attaching the wood rings, thread the rings into the rounded wood slat. Assemble the frame of the baby gym at this point. Chamfer the wooden slats at an angle of approximately 15 degrees to create a symmetrical sloping edge, making sure the holes you made earlier in each slat overlap each other neatly.
Insert one end of the rounded wood slat to the hole and then the other end of the rounded wood slat into the other hole to create the frame. At this point, the baby gym should be able to stand on its own. Make sure the frame isn’t wobbly. If the rounded wooden slat is loose, you apply wood glue to the holes to set the wood piece in place.
Step 4: Reinforcing the Baby Gym
After assembling the baby gym’s frame, you need to attach the leather bands in the smaller holes you made near the base of the frame. The leather bands will reinforce the baby gym, making it even more stable. Thread the leather bands into the holes, connecting the holes with the leather strap and then tying each strap in a firm knot. Once the leather bands are tied, the baby gym is now ready to use!
