Saving the whales is hardly the first thing that comes to mind when furniture shopping but with tons of trash littering the ocean, I think everyone should do their part in protecting and preserving the environment.
Yardbird, a high-end, budget-friendly furniture brand owned by a father-and-son team, Bob and Jay Dillon, came up with an ingenious way to recycle ocean trash! They turned 30,000 pounds of intercepted ocean plastic into sleek pieces of furniture.
It was co-owner Jay who came up with the idea of turning ocean trash into pieces of furniture after observing the worsening epidemic of plastic litter on Asian beaches and waterways. To support conservation efforts while also spreading awareness about the growing problem, the company developed a new material called resin wicker from recycled ocean plastic. Resin wicker became the core material for their 2018 furniture collection. Each piece is made with 50% handmade resin wicker but the company plans to boost recycled content to 70% by 2019.
Yardbird recently launched a pop-up store in Minneapolis and sold over $1 million worth of product within weeks. After the launch, Jay revealed that the company has made sustainability a part of their core mission. The company hopes that their customers value socially conscious approach to design and production as much as they do.
“What we’ve been hearing from our customers is that they value the high quality of Yardbird products, and they also value getting quality furniture at a fraction of the cost,” Dillon says. “Customers also love our white-glove delivery service and setup, and the fact that we dispose of packaging materials.”
This was not the first time Yardbird revolutionized the furniture industry. Years before, the company decided to get rid of middlemen and sold their high-end outdoor furniture online directly to consumers to make their products affordable.
Yardbird’s latest collection is comprised of 10 core collection that features sectionals, love seats, fire tables, and dining sets. The pieces are modern, sleek, and of course, eco-friendly with their wicker resin and aluminum frames. It’s sustainability at its most elegant!
Each piece also comes with Sunbrella® cushions, which are available in neutral colors. The loveseat, sofa, and sectional sets are crafted with faux weathered teak, modular resin wicker, and aluminum frames. The dining collections, on the other hand, feature cast aluminum frame designs and Sunbrella® sling chairs. Completing Yardbird’s 2018 collection is a bevy of ottomans, throw pillows, and covers made with Sunbrella® fabrics in coordinated shades.
As for the price, these pieces go from $30 for pillows to $4,400 for the complete fire table set. The prices are more budget-friendly than other high-end outdoor furniture… plus these pieces help preserve marine life.
